What We're Reading: Deanell Recommends

Manhood-for-Amateurs-337x500.jpg

I am reading Manhood for Amateurs by Michael Chabon. This book was recommended to me by a team member and I have thoroughly enjoyed the humor and candor. It's a collection of essays about the author and his experiences from childhood to his present life in Berkeley.

Chabon writes about raising four children, his love of comic books and baseball, and what it was like to grow up in Maryland in the 1970s.

While it's very often hilarious, Manhood for Amateurs can also be quite moving. The format is fun, and the language is both smart and rhythmic. Up next for me, The Female Brain, and a book of essays about family life from another point of view, Planting Dandelions.

(Want a closer peek into Chabon's life with his wife, novelist Ayelet Waldman? Check out this Remodelista article.)
