What We're Reading: Michelle Recommends

It’s not a yoga manual. Or a self-help book. It’s a memoir molded around the experiences of a busy writer, wife, and mother who discovers a lifelong passion for yoga.

In the spirit of trying something new and different (and based on recommendations from two colleagues), I recently picked up Claire Dederer's Poser: My Life in Twenty-Three Yoga Poses . . . and then I couldn’t put it down.

I don’t read a lot of memoirs, but Poser sounded fun and I ended up loving it. I grew up within the same time frame as the author, and I also relate to her being a self-employed wife and mother.

I’ve done yoga off and on for years. I often make the Sun Salutation sequence a part of my morning routine. However, I really want to get back into a good practice. Poser inspires me. I also enjoyed the author’s writing style and her humor, as well as the yoga history lessons and the references to different studios and instructors.

Poser is a good reminder that we shouldn’t be inhibited by not being perfect. We should just go for it.
