What We're Reading: Deanell Recommends

Non-fiction draws me. It engages my creative side and challenges my brain. If I have a choice in picking up non-fiction or fiction, I always choose non-fiction.

But sometimes fiction surprises me!

I'm a member of a book club that reads mostly fiction. So, every year, I read six to eight novels to stay engaged with the group. One of the novels we read recently was Commonwealth by Ann Patchett, about two families whose lives are brought together by one key event. The book covers more than 50 years and kept my attention throughout.

If Commonwealth had been non-fiction, I would have attached psychology to it. Instead, I was able to revel in the dysfunction of the families. The label gave me freedom to enjoy and play. What a gift!
