In our busy world—with its emphasis on success and productivity—we often equate rest and peacefulness with laziness. If we’re not constantly busy, we feel guilty.

And while productivity isn’t a bad thing, of course, we should also value downtime. Otherwise, we can end up feeling exhausted and depleted.

I devoured this recent book by record executive and producer Rick Rubin, which I received as a gift from a colleague. Then I immediately restarted it. The second time around, I’m savoring it, allowing myself one chapter a day so the ideas can really sink in. I also bought the audiobook, which means I can easily sneak in a chapter when I’m on the road. The title suggests it is simply another book about creativity but it’s really a book about life.
