Is Your Onboarding to Blame for Employee Turnover?
Have you ever had an onboarding experience that really stood out and made you say, “Wow! This is where I belong”?
As I watch my daughter embark on her professional trajectory, it has me reflecting on my first jobs—what I loved, what was hard, and what I learned. Naturally, I’ve been considering the power of a genuine and purposeful welcome into an organization and what makes a quality onboarding experience.
Purposeful onboarding is more than just an “orientation.” It’s about intentionally helping a new team member discover the organizational culture, build relationships, and experience real mentorship, coaching, and training to kick off their contribution toward success.
Despite the ebbs and flows of the hiring market, intentional onboarding impacts the bottom line and is worth the time and energy—especially when you consider how expensive replacing a departing worker can be (typically costing 50%–200% of their annual salary)!
Crafting an onboarding experience doesn’t have to be daunting or expensive… but it does need to be meaningful.
Consider these questions when reflecting on your current onboarding process:
Do you overtly and enthusiastically celebrate the new hire?
Do you design experiences of inquiry, reflection, and discovery?
Do you instill new hires with confidence and pride in their role?
Do you create time and space for rapport-building between the new hire and coworkers?
Reach out—we’d love to help make your onboarding process meaningful and truly memorable.
