What We're Reading: Heather Recommends
I am in awe of authors who can create worlds that are nothing like what we know.
Worlds governed by different laws of nature, completely original landscapes and people, drawn from one author’s amazing imagination.
N.K. Jemisin just won the Hugo Award for the second book in her Broken Earth Trilogy. Jemisin also won it last year for the first book in the series. And it’s likely she’ll win it next year for the third book, which was just released.
I began reading The Fifth Season (the first book) with no expectations and no knowledge of the plot. But this strange world immediately drew me in. It's a world where massive earthquakes destroy civilizations with great frequency, where there are people who can quell the earthquakes using their own minds (and who could also create more earthquakes). Thus, they are highly feared, but also highly controlled.
Great fantasy and science fiction novels explore universal themes of humanity and this is no exception.
